Task 1
Proposition: “The traditional role of the library is outdated in the 21st century”
Affirmative
- The internet provides a seemingly infinite amount of information compared to a finite library space
- The general vibe for the library to be a space for people to do individual work rather then group work, being super quiet and private. contrastingly from our increasingly teamwork required endeavors.
- Simply other more convenient options to study online or cafe connected by the internet,
Negative
- The internet provides alot of miss information. The library contains checked and credited works.
- Perfect environment for individuals to study in peace in quiet, contrastingly from schools, universities or workplaces
- A monumental refection of the community, even providing a gateway for new people to be welcomed.
Proposition: "New additions to heritage buildings should aesthetically complement the original architecture"
Affirmative
Royal Ontario Museum
The intrusive modernized ‘metal origami’ crystal, ‘is looking for attention’ and not only disrupts views to the beautiful historic building, however it has ‘disrupted the clarity of the neoclassical layout of the original museum’ making it ‘a very challenging building to be in and to navigate.’ said Bruce Kuwabara of KPMB Architects. It has since been deemed ‘ugly, useless’ and the worst architectural design of the decade by Washington Post, a design that Globe and mail architecture critic Lisa Rochon, who refers to it as a ‘tin pinata’, truly hopes will be torn down and replaced as soon as possible.
Ulster Museum
As can be seen in the north elevation, neo-classical details were extended as far as the concrete projections, thus achieving the effect of the fade-out of the old building into the new. Similarly, the extensions width, height and materiality all aid the smooth transition and allow the extension to complement to original architecture.
The Military History Museum (Dresden)
In 2001 to have a completely different contemporary style extension. A Steel-framed, half-transparent pointy thing that crashes like a meteorite into the monumental' facade of neoclassical symmetry. This overshadows the primary definition of the building. Rowan Moore, an architecture critic argues that "You cannot put German military history into a box,". The modernist style extension does not convey a realistic representation of what the building represents and what it went through, it is much too simple with no intricate detail contrasting to the war story it is supposed to represent.
Negative
- New ideas of architecture become suppressed
- The older designs will become outdated
